We Recycle Styrofoam

Flat Can Recycling now accepts styrofoam for recycling!

Styrofoam has always been the “problem child” of the waste disposal landscape. Everyone knows it’s bad for the environment, but it’s a necessary evil when it comes to safely packaging and shipping all the goods that go from one place to another in this busy global economy of ours.

That’s why Flat Can Recycling is proud to announce that in collaboration with our partner Dart, we’re now accepting intact pieces of styrofoam (no packing peanuts) for recycling at our Flat Can Recycling HQ drop site!

Styrofoam

Why recycle your styrofoam?

Styrofoam products fill up a shocking 30 percent of our landfill space. Not only is this material non-biodegradable, but large amounts of ozone are released into the atmosphere when it is manufactured, causing respiratory and environmental issues. That’s why it’s so important to recycle it.

What happens to recycled styrofoam?

Thankfully, there’s a way to divert styrofoam from landfills, and responsibly recycle it. When you drop off your intact pieces of styrofoam, we’ll bring them to our recycling partner, Dart, where they process the material to make premium picture frames, crown moulding, cups, new containers and many other useful products.

What styrofoam is accepted

  • We accept: Used polystyrene foam including post-consumer foam cups and “to-go” containers, egg cartons, ice chests, rinsed meat trays, protective packaging foam (frequently used to protect electronics during shipping), and other foam with the #6 inside the chasing arrows triangle.
  • We do not accept: Packing peanuts or other small pieces of styrofoam.

If you bring in styrofoam containers that were used to hold food (such as takeout containers), they must be thoroughly cleaned before you bring them in for recycling.

Where to recycle your styrofoam

You can recycle your hard hats at our 732 Hicks Drive drop site in Elburn, IL between 7 AM and 4 PM, Monday – Friday.
